Allan Goldstein

“Every single person with an investment account at a broker-dealer should take action and ensure passage of this bill – HRXXXX.”

My name is Allan Goldstein. I am 78 years old. I was raised in a lower middle class family in Brooklyn, New York. I worked two different jobs to pay for my education at NYU from where I graduated in 1952.  I served honorably in the Korean War and was awarded both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After I was discharged from the service I began a career in the textile industry, ultimately starting a company with three others. I worked very hard to provide a decent standard of living for my wife and three kids and saved as much as I could.

I had planned on a well-deserved retirement based on my monthly brokerage statement which showed I had enough money for my wife and me to live comfortably for the rest of our lives. We thought we were living the American dream.

My investment was never about greed – this was about investing for a safe and secure retirement as so many Americans are urged to do. I invested conservatively, with a reputable broker. Like everyone who invested with a registered brokerage firm, all of my statements carried the SIPC logo which gave me comfort.  I was shocked to learn that these investments were fraudulent and that the laws that were initially put in place to protect investors are now being used against us.  Who would have thought that SIPC and its Trustee could change the rules, invalidate our statements and wipe out the promised coverage to instead protect SIPC’s fund and member Wall Street firms?

Let this be a cautionary tale. I never thought after so many years of hard work, thrifty living, and aggressive savings that I would have to depend on the kindness and good will of my family and friends. I worked hard and saved hard so I would not have to be a burden to my children. Every single person with an investment account at a broker-dealer should take action and ensure passage of this bill – HRXXXX. I am sorry to say that my country did not serve me and you could be next.
